Although Bergamot is a citrus fruit, it’s not considered edible due to the sourness of the pulp, so the trees are primarily grown for its essential oil production. Many accounts believe that Columbus introduced bergamot to Italy when he brought it with him from the Canary Islands.

Used in aromatherapy to help ease emotional symptoms of:
Relaxing, restoring, calming and antidepressant.
History
The history is unclear, however it was the perfume industry that first stimulated the production of bergamot oil. Also used in Earl Grey tea.
