In ancient Latin cultures Basil was highly prized and considered to be a king amongst the plant world. Today, basil is widely used in the culinary world, especially in Italian cuisine. In aromatherapy, basil has long been used to help relieve aches and pains and for symptomatic relief of respiratory concerns.

History
In Indian culture, basil is dedicated to the god Vishnu and is said to be an incarnation of his wife, Lakshimi (who was the goddess of fortune and beauty). Basil was used extensively in the Middle Ages as a treatment for depression and melancholy.
