This is the story of how HEALINGSCENTS got its name, and yes, it’s all one word.
I have been an entrepreneur for over half my life. It seems hard to believe that when I was 23 years old, I founded Healingscents in a room in my basement in East Vancouver. I’m turning 50 next year.
This was not an easy path, but somehow, I’m still here pouring oils 27 years later.
Aromatherapy in the 90s’ was a very different world than it is today. There were very few of us out there, and those who were mostly used a play-on words for the names of their businesses. Being a young woman, fresh out of Aromatherapy school, I was no different. When I was thinking up names for my company, I tried to find names that had the word “scents” in them. Looking back now it wasn’t very original, but I was young and didn’t know any better. There were certainly no hipsters, that I knew of, in the 90s’ that were starting aromatherapy companies. I was a 23-year-old hippie in a mostly old lady club. So, after many other name options fell through as either being already taken or not accepted by the name registrar, I settled on Healingscents Aromatherapy. I have always liked to go against the flow, so instead of having Healingscents as two words, I made it one, this was my attempt to be rebellious. I also liked the way the name looked when it was written down on paper:. Healingscents Aromatherapy. I just thought it had a nice ring to it but, this decision has kicked me in the ass ever since. No one ever spells it right and it drives me absolutely crazy! My spell check doesn’t even know what to do any more and when you search for Healingscents on the internet, Google always says, “Did you mean Healing Scents?” It is honestly crazy making!
I can’t trademark it because it’s “too descriptive”, so now there are a few other Healing Scents' out there, but thankfully for me (or them) depending on how you look at it, they have all opted for the grammatically correct version of using two words. People do get confused though. There is a Healing Scents in Calgary, and one in the States, as well as a holistic clinic in Victoria. But there is only one Healingscents.
I have thought about changing my business name a million times, but for whatever reason, it has just stuck around for more than a quarter of a century....
At the end of the day, Healingscents is one word, on purpose, so if you are ever writing a testimonial about how much you love my products, (for which I am always very grateful) please spell it right, or you are just adding to my frustration of the many bad choices I made in my 20’s! lol
Yours always,
in love and aromatics
Leah
